چکیده

In this paper we present new methods for accelerating object-based image analysis using distributed computing. This is demonstrated on imagery from the refugee camp Lukole in Tanzania. An IKONOS scene from the refugee camp was chosen and relevant dwelling units were extracted. Promising results were achieved coping with an increasing data load and likewise with the demanded timeliness while a high accuracy of dwelling unit extraction could be maintained.

Transferability of Obia Rulesets for Idp Camp Analysis in Darfur

The analysis of refugee and IDP (internally displaced persons) camps from VHSR (very high spatial resolution) satellite imagery can assist humanitarian relief organisations by providing population estimations and camp structure analysis based on automated dwelling extraction. Since smooth transferability of rulesets in a fine scale and high complexity environment is limited, we present an appro...

Earth observation and GIS to support humanitarian operations in refugee/IDP camps

Critical information on refugee/internally displaced people (IDP) camps can be provided to humanitarian organisations to support planning of emergency response and relief using multi-temporal and multi-scale information from satellite imagery and GIS data. Since 2011 we are providing Earth observationbased information services to Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) on demand. A service on population...

Stratified Template Matching to Support Refugee Camp Analysis in OBIA Workflows

Accurate and reliable information about the situation in refugee or internally displaced person camps is very important for planning any kind of help like health care, infrastructure, or vaccination campaigns. The number and spatial distribution of single dwellings extracted semi-automatically from very high-resolution (VHR) satellite imagery as an indicator for population estimations can provi...

Supporting large-area, sample-based forest inventories with very high spatial resolution satellite imagery

Information needs associated with forest management and reporting requires data with a steadily increasing level of detail and temporal frequency. Remote sensing satellites commonly used for forest monitoring (eg, Landsat, SPOT) typically collect imagery with suffi cient temporal frequency, but lack the requisite spatial and categorical detail for some forest inventory information needs. Aerial...

Object-based Image Analysis Using VHR Satellite Imagery for Monitoring the Dismantling of a Refugee Camp after a Crisis: The Case of Lukole, Tanzania

The use of HR and VHR (high/very high spatial resolution) imagery and OBIA (objectbased image analysis) offers new possibilities for monitoring activities in and around refugee camps to manage, understand, and assess developments and impacts of the camp on its environment (see for example TIEDE et al. 2013, HAGENLOCHER et al. 2012). Here we demonstrate how VHR imagery in combination with OBIA c...
